Tom Raffa is a peripatetic sort who sees business opportunities in everything. Then he acts on them.
Restaurants. Wealth management. Human resources. A frozen yogurt shop. Insurance. Nonprofit consulting. Accounting. Executive recruitment. Coffee bars. Raffa is just one of those people who are always on the hunt for investments.
Aside from his coffee and yogurt forays, his palette of accounting-based businesses grosses $40 million a year. Eighty-five percent of that comes from clients that are nonprofits. Those businesses fulfill Raffa’s desire to do more than just fatten the bottom line.
“Making money is third, fourth or fifth on our list,” Raffa said. “It’s the result. It’s not the why. The why for me at Raffa PC is advancing the community.”

Raffa Wealth Management, LLC (RWM) and Raffa, P.C. today announced the launch of The Study on Nonprofit Investing (SONI), to provide senior finance executives at nonprofit organizations with peer benchmarking data on investment policies and investment performance. The survey, which launches on January 10 and is accessible via an online registration here, will interview finance executives at trade associations, public charities and private foundations.

Traditionally, the role of the audit committee has been to monitor, oversee, and advise the organization’s managers and external auditor as they prepare financial statements and conduct audits, subject to the ultimate authority of the board. However, with the public focus on transparency and accountability, as evidenced by the expanded disclosures on the new Form 990 and the bad press that accompanies a scandal, the challenge for audit committees is to be more proactive in fulfilling their traditional role, complying with current and new legislation, and upholding their organization’s good standing under public pressure. This expanded role can be defined by some "must-do’s."

In the past 12 months, we have seen significant declines in the stock market, an increase in the rate of unemployment, terrorist attacks, and actions to bolster our economy by the Federal Reserve System through numerous interest rate cuts.
Some organizations have received significant contributions for victim assistance programs and similar activities. Other organizations have seen funding reductions from private foundations, with reduced distributions as a result of the current bear market, reduced membership receipts as members seek more value from their membership dollar, and redirection of charitable giving as a result of September 11.
