Thomas J. Raffa Tom is the President and founder of RAFFA, P.C., a consulting, accounting and technology firm started in 1984 with over 150 professionals dedicated to serving the nonprofit community. The Firm currently provides services to over 500 nonprofit clients including audits, tax, consulting, technology and outsourcing.In 1999, Tom started Raffa Financial Services, Inc. (RFSI) to provide insurance and investment products and services to the nonprofit community. In 2005, Raffa Wealth Management (RWM) was formed to provide investment consulting and financial planning to nonprofit organizations, private foundation and high-wealth individual that support the nonprofit sector. With offices in Bethesda, Md., RFSI and RWM have over 35 employees serving almost 250 nonprofit clients. Tom has over 30 years of varied experience in providing services to the nonprofit sector. He has conducted numerous studies including the review and analysis of management structure, internal and operational control, and management information systems. He has also worked with many clients in the areas of compensation and fringe benefits, strategic planning, fundraising, investment policies, indirect costs, tax planning and financial projections. Tom is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and of its Taxation Division and subcommittee on non-profit taxation. He is also a member of the District of Columbia Institute of Certified Public Accountants where he has served on the SEC Practice Committee. Tom has also served on the Greater Washington Board of Trade and works with the American Society of Association Executives. Tom has served as a member on the Financial Officers Task Force and Advisory Committee that worked on the Non-Profit Quality Reporting Project with the Internal Revenue Service and State Charity officials. He has served as the Treasurer on the Board of Trustees of Beacon College of Washington, DC and Boston, Massachusetts. Tom has also been Chairperson and Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Support Center of Washington, D.C. and a member of the Board of Directors of the Support Centers of America, MicroCon, Inc. and Imperial Computer Consultants, Inc. He was a founding member on the Board of the Alliance for Nonprofit Management and the Alliance for Nonprofit Insurance and the Treasurer of the Board and Executive Committee of the Research Institute for Small and Emerging Business. He is currently on the Georgetown University Alumnae Admissions Program and serves as a board member of Compass Fellowship and Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Catalogue for Philanthropy. Tom has received the Volunteer Achievement Award from the Accountants for the Public Interest, the Smart CPA from the Washington Smart CEO magazine and was a finalist for the 2007 Community Service Award. He has written articles for various national publications including The Nonprofit Quarterly, The Nonprofit Times and the Chronicle of Philanthropy covering various topics that affect the nonprofit sector. He has been an instructor and speaker for many nonprofit training programs and conferences and various Federal agencies, and he lectures at the Georgetown University Law Center. Tom is a graduate of Georgetown University, where he served in the business mentor program for over 15 years, and has his CPA certificate from the District of Columbia. |
