Jean Gilbert Named Partner, Laurie Tarpey Named COO at Raffa, P.C. | News Release

Professional services firm has more women in leadership than any other in DC region.

Washington, D.C. – Raffa, P.C. today announced that Jean O. Gilbert has been named partner, and Laurie Tarpey has been named Chief Operating Officer (COO). With Gilbert’s promotion, 12 of 18 partners at the accounting, consulting, and technology firm are women.

“We are proud of the diversity and experience that our leadership teams offer our clients,” said Tom Raffa, Raffa’s founder and CEO. And as a B Corp  we are part of a community of just 2,100 businesses across the globe whose core values and guiding principles have redefined success in business to include not only financial success, but also adherence to stringent standards of transparency and social and environmental accountability.  Both Jean and Laurie have proven their commitment to this vision time and again with our clients and with our internal team. I know that they will help us continue to grow the firm and Do More in our community.”

“I have been fortunate to build my career here at Raffa and am excited by this opportunity,” Ms. Gilbert said. “I am honored to be a part of such an innovative firm and talented team. I know Raffa will continue to provide more value and insight to our clients than other firms can because of the strength and diversity of our leadership.”

In a newly created role, Tarpey will work closely with Raffa’s partners on the company’s overall strategic goals and execution.

“It’s an incredible honor to be named Raffa’s COO and to be entrusted with this responsibility,” Tarpey said. “I look forward to joining an already successful, energetic leadership team to spearhead our internal operations to continue to align our strategy and practices with Tom’s vision of a firm that not only does well but that also does good in the world.  Raffa will continue to bring our best practices and talent to bear as the premier professional service firm for nonprofits and socially minded businesses.”

Raffa’s demographics contrast sharply with national industry trends. Raffa is the only national Top 100 firm where more than 60% of owners and 60% of the employees are women. Additionally, over 70% of partner, managers and employees are women, people of color, LGBT, or non-US born.

She works with over 100 staff accountants providing outsourced and accounting services to over 200 clients. Her team will also conduct financial and operational risk assessments, evaluate internal controls, make efficiency recommendations, and provide expert support for spin-offs, mergers, and dissolutions. Her clients have included the Aspen Institute, American Association of University Women, Children’s National Medical Center, GAVI Alliance, IREX, International Executive Service Corps., Trout Unlimited, and Wounded Warrior Project.

Gilbert’s contributions to the profession include serving on the AICPA Not-for-profit Steering Committee for six years. Gilbert co-chairs the not-for-profit special interest group of Prime Global, an association of independent accounting firms. She has contributed to the Standards of Accounting and Financial Reporting for Voluntary Health and Welfare Organizations (The Black Book). She is also a member of the board and treasurer for Wilderness, Leadership, & Learning (WILL) and is a volunteer for City Dogs Rescue.

Before joining Raffa, Gilbert was the Director of Finance for an international nonprofit where she managed multinational operations. She graduated cum laude from Columbia Union College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.

Tarpey joined Raffa’s Managed Accounting Services Group in 2016 where she has proven herself as a valuable asset to the firm and her clients by providing services that have included leading the budget development for a national, $20 million 501(c)(3) and partnering with the CFO of a $70 million, multi-entity nonprofit on organizational process improvements and financial analysis, as well as serving as interim CFO for a large association. Tarpey also chairs the training committee for Raffa's Managed Accounting Services department of 115 staff. Prior to joining Raffa, Tarpey served nonprofits and for-profits in management and operations leadership roles.

Tarpey received her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics-Accounting from College of the Holy Cross. She later earned a certificate in Nonprofit Executive Management from Georgetown University. Laurie has served as a pro bono nonprofit consultant through Compass, DC; as a Finance Committee member of the Finance and Administration Roundtable; and as a member of the Harvard Business School Club of Washington, D.C.’s committee awarding HBS scholarships to  nonprofit executives to attend HBS's Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management course.
